It’s summer once again. Temperatures in Metro Manila and other parts of the Philippines are already up these passed weeks. The Department of Health (DOH) has been warning the public against the dangers of heat stroke for many consecutive years now as summer approaches. Over the years, temperature in the Philippines has reached 36-42°C.
What is heat stroke? It is a medical condition wherein the body temperature reaches very high levels (~40°C) due to constant heat exposure. It is usually in combination with dehydration. Heat stroke is considered a medical emergency. If untreated, it can quickly damage your brain, heart, kidneys and muscles. The damage worsens the longer treatment is delayed, increasing your risk of serious complications or death. Most commonly, heat stroke often occurs as a progression from milder heat-related illnesses such as cramps, syncope and exhaustion. Although heat stroke mainly affects people over age 50, it can also affect healthy young athletes and anyone who is exposed to prolonged heat. Special precautions should be made for infants and children up to age 4 and adults over age 65, because these age groups adjust to heat more slowly than other people. Patients with particular disease are also at higher risk to have heat strokes – those with hypertension, diabetes mellitus, kidney disease, mental illness, alcoholism, and those with fever. Those taking particular medications are also at risk – diet pills, anti hypertensive medications, methamphetamines and anti-depressants.
What do we need to do to avoid heat stroke? Drink lots of water (versus iced tea, soda, coffee and alcoholic drinks), keep indoors, avoid long direct exposure to sunlight, and wear thin and loose and light-colored clothes. Anything that will help cool your body down is a good measure to prevent heat stroke. What if there are signs of heat stroke already? Go the extra mile and apply ice packs to the patient’s armpits, groin and neck. These are the areas rich in blood vessels close to the skin. And cooling them may reduce body temperature. Remember, always keep cool!

The online program highlights the weekly activities and accomplishments of the whole DOST system. Its latest episodes are also shared at the DOST-PNRI Facebook.
The Philippine Nuclear Research Institute (PNRI), formerly the Philippine Atomic Energy Commission, has been the center of nuclear science and technology activities in the country since 1958. The PNRI is mandated to undertake research and development activities in the peaceful uses of nuclear energy, to institute regulations on the said uses and to carry out the enforcement of said regulations to protect the health and safety of radiation workers and the general public.
The PNRI is an institution of excellence – a provider of innovative and effective nuclear and radiation science and technology for national prosperity.
We contribute to the improvement of the quality of Filipino life through the highest standards of research and development, specialized nuclear and radiation services, technology transfer, and efficient implementation of nuclear and radiation safety practices and regulations.
Pursuant to “Proclamation No. 353 (s. 2023)”, reinforcing the government’s commitment to develop strategic policy dimensions of cybersecurity in the Philippines, the Office of the President of the Republic of the Philippines declared the observance of “Cybersecurity Awareness Month” in October of every year. In line with the Proclamation, the PNRI through the Management Information System Section of Technology Diffusion Division (MISS-TDD) enjoins everyone to a month-long educational awareness campaign that would help individuals gain an insight on current trends and issues on computer security and the future of cybersecurity. The PNRI also joins the international community in signifying and strengthening the country's unwavering commitment towards a unified approach in the digital era of governance.
Welcome to the Official PNRI Cybersecurity Awareness Month!
Technology is everywhere, helping us out in all aspects of our lives, at work, and at home. But as technology evolves, the need for vigilance and awareness also increases. Threats like phishing, social engineering, and malware are more common than ever, so we each need to play our part in keeping our digital space safe.
October is Cybersecurity Awareness Month[1]—the perfect time to ensure you and your teams are security conscious and acting safely. Many major incidents have been narrowly avoided in the past, and even the smallest of actions can have huge and far-reaching impact. Hence, security awareness should be an integral part of everyone’s personal and workday habit.
Cyber risks abound, inside and outside. That is why we have prepared an entire kit of free resources to help you and your teammates be informed and be self-aware on cybersecurity. The entire kit is prepared by the Management Information Systems Section (MISS) with free resources from Knowbe4.com.
This daily dose of cybersecurity awareness tip and insight has what you need to engage security awareness in your workplace in our Institute for an entire month!Read More...
